– WELCOME to my first blog post on ‘Let’s Talk About: Personal Development.’ I felt it would be appropriate to start the blog off with talking about Personal Development overall and why I believe it is so incredibly important and how it has affected my life.
Personal development in my life began at an early age when my Father began paying me $20 per book to read books on attitude, leadership, and personal finance. I can vividly remember being 9 years old reading “The Millionaire Next Door” and earning my $20. From there came “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” and “You Can Negotiate Anything,” and “Everyone Communicates, Few Connect” and so much more. After a while my mother started to pay me to listen to sermons on servant leadership and my father paid for Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, John C. Maxwell, and Les Brown videos – they called it an investment in me that would come full circle someday which has already begun, but more on that later.
Throughout my collegiate life, the beginning stages of my professional career, and my experiences with personal relationships, my foundation of personal development has definitely shown through. I have an incredible amount of confidence in myself and abilities, I’m content with where I am at but always striving for better and greater, and I have a feeling of fulfillment in my life that most people would not experience at my age.
That very lightly covers my experiences with personal development and their rewards – so why should Personal Development be so important to everyone? In my opinion, personal development starts with one’s attitude. If you have the outlook on personal development that it’s a waste of time in regards to reaching your highest potential than you will never participate in pursuing your own development. Studying personal development will cause an attitude shift that will have a chain affect in all areas of your life. To me it seems like common sense – if you want to achieve success wouldn’t you want to start with your own development?
Personal development shows people that it’s necessary to achieve success in all areas of life. If you want more money, better relationships, more happiness and success in your life then you’ve got to become a personal development machine. Jim Rohn says “To have more than you’ve got, become more than you are.” Developing every aspect of your life, growing, and expanding will push you out of your comfort zone, it will 10x your strengths and improve your weaknesses, it will boost your self-esteem and your confidence, and increase your self-awareness.
How would you like to go through life fulfilled, confident, and with purpose? Yes? Great, start with developing yourself. What does that look like? Pursue every avenue of learning, growing, and stretching your mental and physical states. Like Tony Robbins says, “Turn your shoulds into musts.”
Learn everything you can, help as many people as you can, earn as much money as you can, push your workouts as far as you can, and overall grow all areas of your life as much as you can. We’ve all heard that humans are the only species that will not push themselves as far as they can in their lives. A tree will grow as tall as it possibly can grow. Why not be like a tree? We only have one life to accomplish as much as we can? So why not do all that we can in all areas of our life with our one life? Will it take discipline and sacrifice? Sure, but it will be worth it.
